Pop Punk World: Hello Amateur Fight Club! Could first off tell us a little about how you guys met? Is there a story to it?
Amateur Fight Club: “Well, John (drums) and Callum (guitar) met first in college whilst studying music back in 2006, Callum was into more heavier emo music and john straight up pop punk. John knew Chris (vocals) through a tribute act that they were under management for. After sharing musical interests they created an emo/punk band called ‘Five Miles High’, they released 2 EP’s and toured but split after 2 years. After remaining best friends we got back together in 2012 and started writing ‘Tread Carefully’. We then met Dan (bass) through asking around for a bassist, he was the perfect addition with exactly the same music taste and knew the style we wanted. After 8 months of hard rehearsing and writing ‘Tread Carefully’ and ‘Room To Breathe’ were recorded! That brings us to May 2013”.
PPW: Your band name is very unusual, yet original. How’d you come up with it?
AFC: “We had previous names but just didn’t feel right, we didn’t want to make it something too obvious, we wanted it to be different; it had to have that English Indie Rock feel. So we sat in McDonalds before a rehearsal one day and chucked a few words together! As soon as we got to Amateur Fight Club we knew it was the right one”!
PPW: You released your debut single ‘Tread Carefully’ this year. What has the reception been like?
AFC: “It’s definitely been awesome! A broad range of people and styles have really gave us some of the best feedback. Shooting the video and having seeing it every day on TV is the best feeling ever! We’ve been lucky enough to have it promoted on some major websites and TV shows too”!
PPW: Now you’ve only been a band since May. What has been the biggest challenge so far?
AFC: “We’ve been a band again since October 2012, however gone public in May 2013. The biggest challenge has definitely been building a brand new fan base from nothing , it’s so hard trying to get your music heard if you’re not a household name, luckily people has helped us out a lot , from friends and fans to the likes of Scuzz TV and Already Heard Website. Then it’s trying to get good enough shows”!
PPW: As 2013 comes to an end, have you any tours or gigs lined up to close the year out?
AFC: “We have plenty booked at the moment! From the London area, across to Essex, Norwich and Manchester! And we plan on booking more! We have some awesome friends from Sweden who we plan on touring the UK with early 2014 too”!
PPW: London is a very prosperous stomping ground for any new band. Have you hit the circuit since you started? Which bands/venues have you played with?
AFC: “We are extremely excited to be playing the Camden Underworld on October the 30th! It will be our first London show and its gonna be big! We’ve already sold a load of tickets and can’t wait to support our friends The Spin! I think it’s a first step to big things for us”.
PPW: Now we like to ask these final two questions to all our bands:
What is your craziest moment as a band to date?
AFC: “I think its definitely gotta be seeing our video on a daily basis on TV, getting adds from random people saying they saw us on TV. It’s a big dream to have a music video out, for all of us so seeing that was defiantly an awesome feeling”!
PPW: What van do you drive?
AFC: “Haha ok, We have a Transit”!
